Fields

Active contact lenses (conception)
Description: We use the piezoelectric and mechanical properties of compound semiconductors to deform wafer-thin membranes made of diamond in a controlled manner or to guide current-carrying microbeams past each other. These electromechanical components are analysed and optimised with regard to their possible use as active contact lenses or as energy-efficient microswitches. The aim is to use the components in an artificial eye or in a transmitter for the digital transmission of data.
Imaging in the living organism
Description: An infrared-sensitive camera and a semiconductor laser are used in combination. Integrated into an endoscope, this imaging surpasses all existing methods. For the first time, surgeons will be able to observe interventions inside the beating heart directly in real time. The use of harmful X-rays and contrast media can thus be reduced.
Data transmission modules for high speed
Description: We develop a large number of integrated circuits based on III-V compound semiconductors for high-frequency electronics. With gate lengths of only 20 nanometres and operating frequencies between 1 GHz and 0.5 THz, these integrated circuits offer high functionality with small chip areas and low-cost production. These circuits are ideal for the realisation of transmitters and receivers for directional radio links or for optical data transmission through optical fibres. We realise modules for communication systems with data transmission rates of more than 100 Gbit/s.
Microsystems
Keywords: Compound Semiconductor
Quantum sensor technology
Keywords: Development of sensors for the weakest magnetic fields with the help of artificially produced diamonds. Use in electronics, for more precise navigation and in medical technology.
